Chicago resident Bethany McLean, Co-author of this book, will be interviewed tonight at The Hideout.

Citizen reporting via social media can be a great thing. From finding out where mega messes were, to getting info about which watering holes were open for business, social media played a big role during the recent Chicago blizzard. On larger scale, social media has helped us understand explosive political situations, like the 2009 protests in Iran and the current demonstrations in Egypt.

But let’s hear it for the professional reporters too. Like the ones in Cairo getting threatened with beheadings while trying to conduct interviews. Or journalists like Chicago resident Bethany McLean, who exposed the Enron fiasco in her book “Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room,” and recently co-authored “All the Devils are Here: The Hidden History of the Financial Crisis.” I remember during the Great Recession when there was plenty of finger pointing without any real explanation, when the public was constantly told how sophisticated the mechanisms were that controlled the financial market, a non-explanation that helped lead to more confusion and anger.

So I’m thankful for reporters like McLean, who did the heavy lifting and waded through a sea of mortgage-backed securities (and the people and institutions that made them all possible), and then wrote a great book explaining the disaster in great detail.  McLean will be a guest on The Interview Show, a live interview show (duh) hosted by Mark Bazer at The Hideout. If you need an intellectually stimulating appetizer to your Friday night main course, then go check it out.
